A New York Times piece yesterday outlined City Hall's efforts over the past two years to force style on a typically unstylish Midwestern city; Daley's methods include funding emerging artists, hosting an annual fashion week, and founding support networks for designers.
Daley's hope is that the funded designers will stay in Chicago after they make it big to keep the burgeoning fashion movement alive.
Though the scene isn't exactly glamorous yet -- and we doubt it will ever compete with New York, Paris, or Milan -- perhaps someday fashion boutiques will be up there on the list of Chicago attractions along with Chicago dogs, Alinea, improv comedy, and deep dish.
