Swimsuit Trends More About Fashion Than Getting in Water

If you think the one-piece swimsuit can't be as sexy or alluring as the bikini, take another look.

With plunging necklines and side cutouts, the traditional maillot eschews its modest reputation with an updated silhouette that could rival the itsy-bitsy two-piece in skimpiness.

Where it might have been hard to find modernized one-pieces just two years ago, contemporary swimwear labels such as Laguna Beach-based Vitamin A, Santa Ana-based L*Space and ViX have all added the one-piece to their collections.

Despite all the attention the one-piece has gotten lately from fashion magazines, the bikini still reigns as the beach or poolside suit of choice, and what's hot this year incorporates a variety of trends from several seasons past.

Mixing and matching prints is still popular, and embellishment remains big, from hardware touches like metal rings and leather accents to sequins on bikini tops.
