Winter smart: chic coats

Wearing simple jeans and jumper feels so right in the January cold, but how do you keep a semblance of style? Pick a stylish coat and all will be fooled into thinking you are dressed smart from head to toe, Maurizio Pecoraro's cashmere swing coat is a dream, it looks chic but is simple enough not to look incongruous teamed with more casual clothing, down 60% at Farfetch it's still out of my reach at £648. Wallis' purple Jackie O coat is down to a mere £35, which is an unbeatable price for a statement piece. Mike and Chris' slouchy trench (£181.07) is casual and stylish, and will give a touch of effortless elegance to your outfits.

Star style: How to dress for the cold and still look chic

Being from the Antipodes, where winter tends to be more like the summers I have experienced here, dressing for the subzero temperatures of a London winter doesn't come particularly naturally to me. I'm not the best at layering, am still to master the skill of artful scarf-tying and am yet to acquire a masterful collection of cosy, ear-warming hats. It is at this time of year I am constantly spying on Londoners to get winter dressing inspiration. And I am also looking a bit closer at celebrities in the colder climes, to get ideas on how to keep warm without looking like a mis-matched marshmallow in a hat.

Some of my favourite looks in recent days have come from the stars pictured above. Read on to find out what each of their outfits has taught me - so we can all incorporate their chic-ness into our own cold weather dressing...

- Take a cue from Kate Hudson and ditch the basic black coat. Instead, choose pale colours for an elegant look which will help lift your dull winter complexion. Greys work well for coats and knits while cream isn't so impractical if you stick to accessories such as hats and scarves. Add a bit of a pinky cream blush to the apples of your cheeks for that perfect cold weather glow.
- Blake Lively shows us how unexpected colour combinations - in this case, her blue coat and mustard boots - can work wonders to inject a bit of cheer and playfulness to an otherwise dull day.
Leather gloves top off the sophisticated look nicely.- Fur, whether faux or not (I'll leave that decision up to you), is one way of adding texture to your outfit - and also keeping veeeeery toasty. I love Jaime Winstone's Russian hat and red lippy which adds that special something to her basic jeans and tee outfit.
- Another one leading the way when it comes to texture is Cat Deeley, whose fantastic cape coat is set off with black accessories. But don't worry, these ones are anything but basic and boring, with tassels on her boots and a lace scarf upping the ante.

Star style: Chloe Sevigny in new season Louis Vuitton on NYE

While the rest of us are freezing our behinds off in heavy knits, chunky scarves and our secretly beloved ugg boots, young Chloe Sevigny was looking breezy and party-ready in new season (yes, spring-summer) Louis Vuitton last week as she geared up for New Year's Eve in Miami.

Okay, the outfit is six days old... but since it's also wonderfully ahead of time too, I couldn't resist featuring it here so you can appreciate the pop of pumpkin orange, the fabbo shoes and the sheer floaty fabrics we will all be hoping to get our hands on in a few months' time.

Things we want to see more of in 2009: Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes

Wild Young Hearts

We're big fans of Shingai Shoniwa on CQ, and we've featured her great style a couple of times of the site so it's great to hear that her band are bringing new material out. The Noisettes' latest single is called Wild Young Hearts and it's a heart-burstingly wonderful piece of romantic pop, it kind of reminds me of Kylie's Tears on my Pillow which is a good thing! Watch the video above, and hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more of Shingai in 2009.

Star style: Most Improved - Lauren 'Lo' Bosworth

The last time Lauren 'Lo' Bosworth featured on the pages of Catwalk Queen, it was in a section no star would ever want to be: filed under Frock Horrors.

However, we spotted Lauren Conrad's sidekick on The Hills in this tidy ensemble leaving the studios of the CW11 Morning Show in New York this morning and we have to say she looks very smart and not to mention toasty warm in this lovely outfit. The wide legged trousers are much better suited to her figure than the bunched satin skinnies she was wearing last time and we love the grey coat too. Tres chic Lo!

Gwyneth Paltrow shares her style secrets via GOOP

In addition to clearing her closet for charity, Gwyneth Paltrow is sharing her style secrets via her new lifestyle website, GOOP. In her latest newsletter, the actress says: "I used to spend a lot of time looking at fashion, reading about fashion, generally being bemused by fashion. Then one day I had children and it all kind of went out the window. For a few years I was basically in sweatpants and I didn't mind it."

So what's the key to her signature style? Basics. "black leggings, [a] gray tank, and house slippers," she says. And when you just "throw on [a] sweater dress over the leggings and tank, add boots". To sign up for the GOOP newsletter click here.

Star style: Gwyneth Paltrow and Liz Hurley are pretty in pink for breast cancer charity bash, New York

It was a pink parade last night at The Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Hottest Pink Party in New York. Estee Lauder spokesmodels Liz Hurley and Gwyneth Paltrow attended the benefit, held at the Waldorf-Astoria, and hosted by Mrs Evelyn H. Lauder herself.

As the theme suggested, all guests were asked to wear pink, with Liz Hurley reflecting her new Indian connections in a pale ombre pink sari (note: ombre is very on-trend for spring).

While Gwyneth Paltrow turned heads in a fuchsia-coloured, thigh-splitting number, featuring a black sash tied at the waist. With her new shorter curly do' it was a whole new look for the actress, and one that I hope she will stick to.

What do you think of each of their looks? We'd love to hear your comments, tell us below.

Coleen McLoughlin voted Britain's most influential style icon

Princess of the WAGs (it's fair to assume that Victoria Beckham is the Queen) Coleen McLoughlin has been voted Britain's most influential style icon. The fiancée of Wayne Rooney even beat out Kate Moss and Sienna Miller to win the title, in a survey conducted by Look magazine. Are you surprised?

Carry on reading to see who else made the list...

1,200 British women participated in the survey to name their favourite style icon. Kate Moss came in at second place, ahead of Sienna Miller in third place, with Victoria Beckham following in at fourth place.

"Coleen has transformed herself from Puffa-jacket schoolgirl to style icon in just a few years," said Ali Hall, editor of Look. "Women relate to her as she's more shapely than your average WAG. She doesn't mind splashing out on a designer 'it' item but mixes it with the great stuff available on the high street."

McLoughlin is due to marry her footballer beau on 12th June. Last week, it was revealed that she had a marathon 10-hour dress fitting for her bridal gown, reportedly worth £100k designed by Marchesa.

Look magazine's top 10 style icons:
1. Coleen McLoughlin
2. Kate Moss
3. Sienna Miller
4. Victoria Beckham
5. Cheryl Cole
6. Kylie Minogue
7. Gwen Stefani
8. Keira Knightley
9. Lily Allen
10. Angelina Jolie

Armani intrigues with menswear, D&G scottish style

By Jo Winterbottom

MILAN (Reuters) - Giorgio Armani's retro spy style and luxury looks won whistles and loud applause after his winter 2009 menswear show here on Tuesday, as buyers and journalists acknowledged a classic show from the doyen of Italian fashion.

Armani, the last of the big names to present his ideas, chose velvets and silks mixed with tweed in blacks, greys and night-sky blues for his men to wear next winter.

Spies came to mind as models walked down the catwalk, their hands in the pockets of dark, shiny mackintoshes wearing tall dark fedoras and shades.

Velvet -- already a trend at Milan's shows -- was everywhere, in trousers, jackets, shirts and coats, as well as gowns for a couple of female models who joined the show.

A black velvet evening coat swept down to the knee and was matched with velvet shoes, while for the women, a long black gown was held barely there by the narrowest of halter necks.

Armani, known for his classic lines and soft looks, made a collar into a velvet fringed scarf or stood it high in pale speckled blue under a velvet jacket.

There were warm, wraparound coats in sheepskin or wool, and heavy jackets.

Armani's men carried their hats as well along with gloves and a slim portfolio or a big squashy travel bag. Continued...

Emma Watson shows off a new look for In Style magazine

Emma Watson is pictured looking very glamourous in the latest issue of In Style.

We're a big fan of Harry Potter's Hermione at Shiny Towers, so much so we made her Woman of the Week on Dolly Mix. In the shoot Emma goes for a retro candy-coloured look and my, she looks so grown up! In Style have made a short video of the shoot where you can see the stylist picking out clothes for her while she larks about in a prom dress.

Sienna Miller's winter style: 'folorn chic'

Sienna Miller was snapped out in the streets of London yesterday, looking just about as happy as anyone can look when they've just come back to Britain after a holiday in Mexico. In December.

That said, she did look rather dapper - if a little Olsen Twin-slash-Michael-Jackson-like - in a swing coat, trilby, sunglasses, leggings and big cosy Ugg boots. If you to copy her folorn orphan - I mean, 'cosy winter' - style, take a look at our Fab Winter Coats List. It's guaranteed to keep any forlorn Victorian child cosy this Christmas.

Karl Lagerfeld touts Amy Winehouse as a style icon

What does Amy Winehouse have in common with a French fashion powerhouse? More than you'd think.

Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld has sited Amy Winehouse as inspiration for his latest collection which he previewed in London last week. The pre-Fall 2008 collection (ah, fast fashion at its finest), titled Métiers d'Art, marched models down the runway with beehives riding high and black eyeliner thicker than ever. "She's a style icon," Lagerfeld said of the angst-ridden singer. "She is a beautiful, gifted artist. And I very much like her hairdo. I took it as an inspiration." He went on to compare the beehive to film star Brigitte Bardot's bouffant in the Sixties.
"She is the new Brigitte."

Talk about fashion's highest compliment. And it makes more sense than you would think first off. Lagerfeld's Chanel has always been a bit of a rocked out version of the classic Parisian label. So mixing in a bit of Camden cool (or is it East End grunge now that she's moved?) with the elegant tweeds of Chanel isn't exactly brand new.

Amy didn't attend the
show last week which had classic style icons like Kate Moss on the guest list, but we're hoping that she'll score a bit of Chanel swag out of this. And first on the list should really be a new pair of ballet pumps.

But while you're waiting Amy, check out our
Top Ten Fabulous Flats list. Please.

For the rest of us, we'll just have to be inspired by Amy's choice of outerwear. Head to the list of
top 10 black leather jackets to score your own.

How to Develop Your Own Personal Fashion Style

Samuel L. Jackson has a Kangol hat. Jude Law always seems to have a beautiful tailored English suit with a colored shirt.

Mischa Barton from the hit TV show "The OC" has her beautiful frilled skirts. What is your personal fashion style?
Have you ever sat down and worked out your personality and what would suit you? You should. After this article you will have some ideas of how to gain that look. THAT LOOK. The look that makes people say, "They have great sense of personal style."

First, take a serious assessment of your personal style. Are you traditional? Are you modern with some punk attitude? Fashion forward perhaps, daring even? You have to find this out. This heads you in the right direction.

Second, why are you trying to develop your own personal fashion style? What is the reasoning behind it? Are you trying to be more noticeable, just for fun, or for the opposite sex?
Third, find your niche market on your body. Britney Spears uses her belly button, and has it stand out. Perhaps your neck, ears, eyes, chest, etc. Pick your favorite part and do something with it.

Fourth, because you know your personality, find a celebrity that has a similar taste as you. Get People Magazine or In Style Magazine, flip through and find a celebrity that you would like to copy. Dress like them, and add your own flavor, and let your look evolve.

Fifth, what would you change first? Your hair? Go to a salon. Your clothes? Go to the fashion district of your city. Jewelry? Find some nice boutique thrift stores with some antique or modern jewelry depending on your look. If your going for a huge change, pick out something with a new outfit and slowly incorporate it as jewelry, shirt, or scarf if you don't want a sudden change.

Sixth, rely on accessories first. Handbags, sunglasses, and bracelets are a great way to gradually infiltrate and destroy your old drab look with your new fashion personality.

Good luck in creating your personal fashion style. Make sure you incorporate your new fashion to hide some flaws in your body. Believe me everyone has them, just hide them well, or even better, accentuate your assets! Have fun doing it, but make sure you experiment and ask for people's opinions in most of what you do. But overall, enjoy yourself by expressing your new personal fashion style.

Imitate Kate Hudson's style with this canary yellow printed mod dress from Puella!

Admittedly I've only ever seen her in one film, but I'm still a huge fan of lovely Kate Hudson. She looked fabulous at the baby shower of Naomi Watts (above left), perfectly dressed in an adorable loose yellow printed minidress. If you want to get your hands on some of her star style, you can pick up the very same 'Printed mod dress' in canary from Puella Boutique. At US$172 it won't break the bank and is a lot less expensive than I would have expected. Plus it's pretty versatile and can be dressed up with heels or down with flats depending on the occasion.

What do you think?

A Topshop dress, Hilary Duff style

Earlier this month we showed you how to get Hilary Duff’s NBC Today show concert look with a Sonia by Sonia Rykiel dress. Well we’ve spotted one that is sort of similar on sale at Topshop. This black pleated dress with circle appliqué detail at the neck is quite reminiscent of Hilary’s dress, only with a round neckline and minus a belt. It’s a little more flower-child, but outfits are never as fun when they are 100% identical to pieces you’ve coveted on the catwalk or in the pages of a high fashion magazine. Get a similar look to Hilary's by adding gold hoop earrings and bangles, vamp up the eye make up a little and you'll be ready to dance the night away too.

U.S. style standards may bend to Beckham

David Beckham: international soccer star, heartthrob, designer clotheshorse and European fashion icon.
But does he have what it takes to influence the looks of that notoriously stodgy species known as the American man? For the brave few, maybe.

For the others, maybe he can give them what he is best known for - a good kick - to try some new things that could take them out of the baggy pants-big shirt rut, men's fashion experts say.

"Beckham's here to show us not to be scared," says Daniel Biloett, men's fashion expert for About.com. "It's OK to look this great."

Beckham, No. 23 for the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team, has made his name in fashion by becoming a kind of chameleon, trying on hairstyles, trends and designers to suit each passing whim. He has cultivated an eclectic style, wearing everything from tight Armani suits to rhinestone-encrusted track suits.

That fondness for sexy clothes contrasts with America's looser, boxier style, says Biloett.
Beckham wears body-conscious pants and shirts unbuttoned to the navel, things many American men, who are more "nervous about their heterosexuality," would reject on principle.

Beckham is often all about being put together, touting the benefits of facials and manicures, and admits to both shaving his body and highlighting his hair.

Then there is his willingness to take on many different looks.

A wide variety of today's trend-setters offer different kinds of looks - Jay-Z's hip-hop cool; the clean-cut look of Tom Brady; the rakish style of Daniel Craig - but those guys usually pick one look and stick to it.

"The jury's still out in terms of his taste level," says Wendell Brown, senior fashion editor at Esquire magazine.

But even Beckham's ill-conceived style choices have had an influence in Europe: His bleach- blond fauxhawk inspired a generation of British schoolchildren, and his short-lived penchant for shaving off half an eyebrow almost caught on.

Catherine Zeta Jones in the Big Apple

Catherine shows she’s all business poured in a slinky brown dress, gold slides and smoky sunglasses. The divalicious mother-of-two certainly doesn’t need help in the fashion department.

Catherine Zeta Jones wowed us in The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment and Ocean’s Twelve. She’s been one actress who can handle both comedy and drama with equal flair. Besides being the former pitchwoman for T-Mobile phones, she has a lucrative contract pushing products for cosmetics mogul Elizabeth Arden. With all that and an Oscar under her belt, CZJ has much to appreciate.

Seen in this recent photograph, the Jones woman aka Mrs. Michael Douglas leaves a black SUV to promote her new film No Reservations. The movie is about a leading gourmet chef, played by Catherine who finds her life altered upon taking custody of her niece. The cast includes Aaron Eckhart, Abigail Breslin and Patricia Clarkson.

Traveling In Style
Catherine shows she’s all business poured in a slinky brown dress, gold slides and smoky sunglasses. The divalicious mother-of-two certainly doesn’t need help in the fashion department. What we loved about this look is not just how much it works for her, but the expression on her face gives nothing away. She’s got all the aloofness of a star from yesteryear.

Someone you’d know little about except that she has good taste in clothing! The Welsh-bornbeauty recently worked a day at a restaurant while prepping for NR and everyone declared how much she resembled CZJ, which she laughed off and said she gets it all the time. Another Hollywood mom with a sense of humor. Here’s to the film’s success, we certainly have “no reservations” about your outfit, Miss Jones!

The film opens July 27th in theaters.
