Star style: How to dress for the cold and still look chic

Being from the Antipodes, where winter tends to be more like the summers I have experienced here, dressing for the subzero temperatures of a London winter doesn't come particularly naturally to me. I'm not the best at layering, am still to master the skill of artful scarf-tying and am yet to acquire a masterful collection of cosy, ear-warming hats. It is at this time of year I am constantly spying on Londoners to get winter dressing inspiration. And I am also looking a bit closer at celebrities in the colder climes, to get ideas on how to keep warm without looking like a mis-matched marshmallow in a hat.

Some of my favourite looks in recent days have come from the stars pictured above. Read on to find out what each of their outfits has taught me - so we can all incorporate their chic-ness into our own cold weather dressing...

- Take a cue from Kate Hudson and ditch the basic black coat. Instead, choose pale colours for an elegant look which will help lift your dull winter complexion. Greys work well for coats and knits while cream isn't so impractical if you stick to accessories such as hats and scarves. Add a bit of a pinky cream blush to the apples of your cheeks for that perfect cold weather glow.
- Blake Lively shows us how unexpected colour combinations - in this case, her blue coat and mustard boots - can work wonders to inject a bit of cheer and playfulness to an otherwise dull day.
Leather gloves top off the sophisticated look nicely.- Fur, whether faux or not (I'll leave that decision up to you), is one way of adding texture to your outfit - and also keeping veeeeery toasty. I love Jaime Winstone's Russian hat and red lippy which adds that special something to her basic jeans and tee outfit.
- Another one leading the way when it comes to texture is Cat Deeley, whose fantastic cape coat is set off with black accessories. But don't worry, these ones are anything but basic and boring, with tassels on her boots and a lace scarf upping the ante.

Trend for fall: gloves, fingerless gloves, long gloves and more gloves

Fall inventory is pouring in to stores all around, and they've all got one key fall accessory in stock: gloves. We've already seen every starlet don the fingerless type at one point or another, but some retailers want to slip in other styles into your shopping lists. Elbow length, delicate knits, long fingerless and wools, anyone? I was a little wary, even after seeing the huge stock of gloves on Shopbop, but then I saw this lovely gray dress and silver bag complemented with runched elbow length fingerless gloves. Even if they'd look like gym socks by themselves, those cotton gloves really work on that girl, no? US$87 for closed finger gray gloves, US$58 for shorter fingerless gloves, US87 for fingerless long gloves.

Katie Holmes is a huge fan of the new trend for wide-legged jeans

A few months ago I certainly wouldn't have predicted that I'd be saying this, but out of all the different takes on the wide-legged jeans look so far, Katie Holmes seems to be working the trend particularly successfully - which is lucky really, because she is hardly photographed not wearing a pair at the moment!

Mrs Cruise herself favours J Brand Joplin jeans, and if you want to get your hands on a pair they're actually reduced to US$172 in indigo at the moment (click here to take a look). To imitate Katie's style on a budget, you can pick up these Lux wide legged jeans from Urban Outfitters UK for £48, Topshop's military jacket for £55 and the 'Far' red patent peep toe heels from Barratts which are £30.
What do you think?

Trend Alert: Kimberley Stewart and Ana Matronic share fringed styles (and dance moves!)

Have Kimberley Stewart and Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters been secretly swapping style tips? It seems that both lively gals were spotted overnight wearing fringed dresses in London. While Anna performed at the O2 Arena in gold fringeing which suited her to a tee, Kimberley got down at the St Tropez party at Amika nightclub in long black fringing. It seems they've both been swapping dance moves also.
Keep reading for more on this trend...

This trend of fringing has been slowly but surely building since the spring/summer collections debuted earlier this year. It was strong in collections from both Prada and Givenchy, which filtered out into accessories such as handbags.
Interested in trying out this trend yourself? Then
Missoni's "Ethel" fringe dress is currently on sale for £300 (reduced from £1145) at Little London. On a budget? Then perhaps this flapper style fringed dress from Etsy for $34 will do the trick.

Trend Alert: Side Strap Handbags

The side-strap handbag has become a must have item for Hollywood starlets. It’s a must-have TREND for the summer. Miu-Miu and Prada seem to have added a long strap for every bag in the spring/summer collection.
The nice thing about the side strap is that it’s much more comfortable and a lot safer. I don’t know about you guys but when I go out at night I'm always in fear of losing my clutch, but with a side-strap, the bag is basically glued to you.
Stars that are big fans of the style are Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson and even Naomi Watts was seen sporting one over the weekend while shopping at the Farmer’s Market.
If you wanna splurge go get yourself a Miu-Miu or Prada handbag with the side-strap, but if you are on a budget Forever 21 is the way to go.
