Victoria Beckham rocks Giambattista Valli in Manchester; reveals more about dress collection

Sticking to her usual style routine of clean lines, towering heels and perfectly groomed locks, Victoria Beckham landed in Manchester last week to promote her new fragrance, Signature. While in town, she opened up about her forthcoming dress collection, set to debut at New York Fashion Week: "They're very sexy dresses. Full-length frocks and bold colours - stuff that makes women feel good. I'm just showing it to a collection of magazine journalists and boutique retailers because I want to start off small and see what the reaction is. I really hope people will like it."

Victoria impressed locals when she stepped out last Thursday evening in a shiny black Giambattista Valli catsuit, featuring super-wide trousers. The following day she greeted fans at Harvey Nichols to official launch her new perfume, which she shares with hubby, David Beckham. Donning a pair of silver sequinned Christian Louboutin heels, and a tight white sleeveless dress from Giambattista Valli's autumn/winter '08 collection, it included a feathered back, giving Victoria an angel-like appearance.
Check out the steamy new commercial for the Beckhams' new Signature fragrance.

David Beckham and Snoop Dogg talk shop with plans for footwear range

Should David Beckham and rapper Snoop Dogg ever decide they've had enough of their respective professions they'll have plenty of other options to fall back on. The forward-planning pals are discussing an unlikely alternative earner - their own range of bedroom slippers.

"We are talking about making a slipper together," revealed the US rap star. "So when I stop rapping and he stops playing soccer we can kick back and slip on a house shoe."

Their mutual appreciation for the comfy footwear was established after the soccer ace made a guest appearance on Snoop's US reality show Father Hood. "I got David a pair of slippers as a present," says the Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Boss star. "He took a picture of himself wearing them and sent it to me. I said, 'They look cool!'."

It seems the pair would more than jump at the chance to work with each other again, too. "I’ve been a big hip hop fan for many years," enthuses David. "To be asked to do something with Snoop was incredible." And Snoop - whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr - is equally as quick to praise his British pal. "David and I go back years," he says. "He's terrific with my kids and taught them how to shoot and score the perfect goal."

David's wife apparently took more convincing, however. Snoop has revealed that at first Victoria wasn't impressed by her husband's new choice of pal. "She didn't like me much," he admits. "She didn't like my bad boy persona." In the end though, the rapper won her over. "She's seen my show," he continued. "I'm cool with her now she knows I'm family orientated - that I have a structure and a wife."

David Beckham shows us his Armani pants

The first campaign pics of David Beckham modelling pants for Emporio Armani have been released, much to the delight of many a female office worker's desktop I'm sure. The LA Galaxy star is reported getting £20million for a three-year deal for the campaign in which he will challenge Calvin Klein's successful red waistband range fronted by Arsenal player Freddie Ljungberg. “[David is] a man with a great sense of style. There was a time when soccer players were not always considered to be fashion role models. David Beckham has helped to change that” said Armani. The Emporio Armani Underwear collection will launch in the U.S. launch early next year.

Intimately Beckham Night to be available in the US September 2007

September 2007. [Just Jared] However, lotsa Posh and Becks fans have noticed something odd about Posh's hair - its dark, and I guess Photoshop isn't the answer.

Apparantly its an older picture from the Posh and Becks monstrous archive of photos of themselves.

[Victoriadavidbeckham] That theory doens't make sense to me since I thought her hair was long back then... Ah well.

Personally, anyway, I was more taken with the W magazine pictures than this fragrance ad - it doens't look intimate at all.
She might be too angular to carry of the sultry night thing.

Posh's "totally major" fashion project

Victoria Beckham is set to begin work on a new fashion project in which she will be creating denim garments, according to her website.

The diva, who recently moved to Los Angeles with footballer husband David, promised that the new line would be "totally major" in a statement where she described her life in one of America's most posh cities.

Speaking about her new home, also described as "totally major", the singer revealed: "Well we have finally unpacked our boxes and I am loving our new house. "Just adding some of the finishing touches to it actually and then it really will feel like home."

She added that her children were looking forward to starting at their new school and that she was making sure "they are all kitted out with new schoolbags and pencil cases".

"[Y]ou remember what it's like going back to school, you've got to have a new EVERYTHING!"

Posh Spice also revealed she attended a glitzy launch party in Bel Air last week for the couple's new fragrance Intimately Beckham. Besides work and family life, Victoria has also been enjoying the California lifestyle with regular visits to restaurants and beauty parlours. "I have been busy having a good look around LA, checking out the restaurants and the beauty parlours - well you never know when you might need a facial," she joked.Posh and Becks recently moved to the West coast after the former Real Madrid star signed a lucrative deal with LA Galaxy. Since their arrival in the US the couple have appeared at a host of A-list parties and in a number of magazines.

They have been regularly photographed with Hollywood power couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and a one-hour show about Victoria's search for a house in LA has been broadcast on American television.

Victoria will be performing in the Spice Girls world tour in December and January.

Madonna, Guy beat Beckhams in fashion poll

Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie have been voted the best-dressed celebrity couple.

The pair beat David and Victoria Beckham and 'Sex AndThe City' star Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick in the poll.

Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, whose relationship is rumoured to be going through a troubled patch, came second for their 'smouldering' red-carpet look.

New Los Angeles residents Posh and Becks were third in the survey of 7,000 fashion fans for In Style magazine.

Singer Gwen Stefani and her rock star husband Gavin Rossdale were fourth, followed by actress Demi Moore and her younger husband Ashton Kutcher, for their 'complimentary' wardrobe.

Actress Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes are sixth, while Sarah Jessica Parker, famous as Carrie in 'Sex and the City,' and her actor husband Matthew Broderick are seventh.

'Batman Returns' star Kate Bosworth and British model James Rousseau make it into eighth place.

Katie Holmes - who has received fashion advice from Posh Spice - and Tom Cruise also made it into the list, in ninth position.

Despite Kelly Brook's disastrous appearance on the red carpet for the premiere of the film Snatch, when she wore a pink crystal-encrusted dress with matching knickers, the British TV presenter and actress is 10th, with fiancee Billy Zane.

Posh lineup on annual best-dressed list

Nicolas Sarkozy, the newly elected president of France, is now rubbing well-tailored shoulders with Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney, at least among this year's Vanity Fair best-dressed list.

The magazine's 68th annual list also saw retired star Japanese midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata, American rocker Lenny Kravitz and filmmaker Sofia Coppola honoured for their sartorial elegance.

Among the couples on the 2007 International Best-Dressed List were Hollywood leading couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who featured along with former England captain David Beckham and his pop star wife Victoria, aka Posh Spice.

While Beckham has appeared on the list before, it was the first time the pair had appeared as a couple.

"Beckham, like his wife, has a body made for clothes and, of course, looks wonderful even dressed in nothing but his tattoos. Posh and Becks are each other's best accessories," the magazine's Amy Fine-Collins said.

Other notables include actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, Michelle Obama, the wife of Democratic Party presidential hopeful Barack Obama, and Bee Shaffer, daughter of Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Another second generation celebrity - Ivanka Trump, daughter of real estate mogul Donald Trump - made the list along with US actress Renee Zellweger and British actor-director Richard E Grant.

The list appears in the magazine's September issue.

Beckhams named in magazine's best-dressed list

British soccer idol David Beckham and his wife Victoria have joined French President Nicolas Sarkozy on a list of world's best-dressed people compiled by Vanity Fair magazine.

The fashionable British duo, who have just moved to Los Angeles, were listed by the magazine as one of the world's 10 best-dressed couples alongside Hollywood star couples Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.

The newly-elected French president made the 68th annual list for the first time, along with Michelle Obama, the wife of U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama, and former soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata.

"It's not just about how much someone spends, it is about having real elegance, style, and individuality," Vanity Fair special correspondent Amy Fine Collins said in an interview.

The September issue of the magazine, which hits national newsstands on August 7, gave nods to musical, literary and philanthropic icons alike, whether known for their brains or their beauty.

The magazine said it searched beyond the silver screen and fashion runways to select 61 stars of style for the list.

Rocker Lenny Kravitz and former Giants running back and television commentator Tiki Barber both made the list for the second time after being selected in 2001 and 1998 respectively.

It was the second consecutive appearance for the perpetually black suit clad author Fran Lebowitz and actress Renee Zellweger.
Some well-known offspring were also been named to the list - Ivanka Trump, real-estate developer and daughter of Donald Trump, and Bee Shaffer, Columbia University student and daughter of Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The annual issue, started in 1940, tallies the votes of more than 1,000 tastemakers, from retailers to editors, fashion designers, restaurant owners and hairdressers.

"It's a democratic system like electing a president," Collins said.

"There is a committee like the electoral college that reviews the results, and chooses the top contenders."

Adding to its egalitarian style, the list doesn't rank its winners from greatest to least.

The fashion industry was represented by Ethiopian-born model Liya Kebede and American fashion designer Tory Burch.

Vanity Fair also elected a few names to its Best Dressed Hall of Fame for people showing consistently classic taste.

Among this rarefied group were silver-haired newscaster Anderson Cooper and US movie star George Clooney, famous for his clean white shirts and salt-and-pepper tresses, and filmmaker Sofia Coppola.

Can Beckham kick-start a fashion revolution?

David Beckham: international soccer star, heartthrob, designer clothes horse and European fashion icon.

But does he have what it takes to influence the looks of that notoriously stodgy species known as the American man? For the brave few, maybe. For the others, maybe he can give them what he is best known for - a good kick - to at least try some new things that could take them out of the baggy pants/big shirt rut, men's fashion experts say.

''Beckham's here to show us not to be scared,'' says Daniel Biloett, men's fashion expert for About.com. ''It's OK to look this great.''

Beckham, now No. 23 for the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team, has made his name in fashion by becoming a kind of chameleon, trying on hairstyles, trends and designers to suit each passing whim. He has cultivated an eclectic style, wearing everything from tight Armani suits to deconstructed jeans to flashy rhinestone-encrusted tracksuits.

That fondness for sexy clothes contrasts with America's looser, boxier style, says Biloett. Beckham wears body-conscious pants and shirts unbuttoned to the navel, things many American men, who are more ''nervous about their heterosexuality,'' would reject on principle. (Maybe they should look to his marriage with the coolly beautiful Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, and a fashion icon herself, if they want reassurance that, yes, many women do like this look.

Most men here, even stylish ones, like their pants three sizes too big and their shirts big and billowy, he says. American males are eager to be comfortable and to appear laid-back. ''If you look too put together, you appear persnickety,'' he says. But Beckham is often all about being put together, touting the benefits of facials and manicures, and admits to shaving his body and highlighting his hair. Then there is his willingness to take on many looks.

Even though a wide variety of trend-setters offer different kinds of looks today - Jay-Z's hip-hop cool, the sporty clean-cut look of Tom Brady, the rakish style of Daniel Craig - those guys usually pick one look and stick to it.

''Stylists create an individual look, and it's marketed that way,'' says Mark-Evan Blackman, chair of the menswear design department at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Beckham's free-spirited, experimental approach could give men permission to try on different styles, Blackman says. ''We accept radical change in women more than we do in men,'' Blackman says, pointing to Madonna's or Jane Fonda's constant reinvention. But ''the people handling him might steer him toward just one look because that's what we understand.''

Of course, experimentation means at least occasional failure. ''The jury's still out in terms of his taste level,'' says Wendell Brown, senior fashion editor at Esquire magazine.

Fans were skeptical when Beckham started wearing giant diamond earrings. Photographers winced when he grew his hair into a mullet. And the public recoiled when he paired velour tracksuits with pink-polished fingernails.

There's a chance that truly out-there styles will be especially off-putting for American men, says David Kornberg, senior vice president of men's merchandising for Express. Men's fashion operates differently than women's, he says. Above all, men's clothes have to be ''masculine and applicable to a man's life,'' he says - not runway-style shocking.

But even Beckham's ill-conceived style choices have had an influence in Europe: His bleach blond fauxhawk inspired a generation of British schoolchildren.

Most of the time, Beckham's look is wearable and contemporary. Regular guys can envision themselves in the types of graphic T-shirts and blazers Beckham wears around town, Kornberg says. The Jean Paul Gaultier sarong Beckham sported on a beach vacation is ''less understandable'' to the nonfamous.

Still, his status as a top athlete could help him disseminate a kind of European chic and a sensibility about fashion to the more inhibited men of America, he says. '

'Plenty of young, straight, girl-crazy men think nothing of getting pedicures,'' Brown says, ''so people should give American men more credit.''

Mary Kate Olsen at the David Beckham debut in California

Many spectators and paps were out and about at the recent debut of David Beckham with his new soccer team LA Galaxy. The golden boy drew in record crowds for the event, held at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California.

Seen at the Center were Beckham's wife Victoria and their three sons, actresses Katie Holmes, Eva Longoria and Mary Kate Olsen. While soccer can be a fascinating sport, most of the people there weren't around to see LA Galaxy as they were for Mr. David Beckham, who by now has become a major fixture on the Hollywood radar.

Seen in this recent photo, Mary Kate makes her appearance at the debut dressed in one of her typical looks. MK and sister Ashley acted on the series Full House since the age of nine months until the series was later canceled. The future of the entire cast was up in the air, except for the siblings, who were in negotiations for their own series. While their new show tanked, the Olsens were moguls in their own right thanks to made-for-video movies and a mass merchandising line which added to their Full House earnings, gave them a net worth of $100 million. Post-television, their acting careers have not been as rosy, but the duo seems to have a permanent place on Hollywood's A-list. Mary Kate ended an affair with shipping heir Stavros Niarchos in 2005, who later moved onto Paris Hilton. She left the East Coast permanently in a move to start fresh while her sister remains in NY.

That move seems to have been a smart one, as Mary Kate has carved herself a niche in the style-conscious world of celebrity fashion. She and sister Ash are planning to start a couture line named "The Row" after the success of their mass-produced apparel.

MK is known for her creation of the boho-chic look, a bohemian, laidback Californian style consisting of boots, oversized shades, flowing skirts and baggy sweaters. Somehow, she seems identical to a shorter, younger version of Daryl Hannah. Hannah had the same baggy wardrobe, disheveled-looking hair and dark eye pencil that the Katester is so fond of wearing.

Hippie Chick

Seen in this recent photo, Mary Kate makes her appearance at the debut dressed in one of her typical looks. She balances out a pair of skinny pants with a roomy gray tee shirt, black peep-toe slingbacks and oversized bag. While we think her outfits all year are an effort to downplay her multi-millionaire status, or merely look as unlike Paris Hilton as possible, she works her own style and for that she gets a few points. Hopefully when she passes 25 in a few years, she will discover it's not so bad to look one's age once in a while.

Fashion Frisk: The Cruise Bash for the Beckhams

Sunday evening, July 22nd in the Museum of Contemporary Art was the setting for one of the year’s most exclusive events. It was a soiree thrown by Tom Cruise to welcome his new friends, the Beckhams.

The Museum in downtown Los Angeles, California, played host to Hollywood’s biggest movers and shakers. The guest list included no less than actress Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher who previously threw a reception for the pair, Bruce Willis, Scary Spice Mel Brown, model Devon Aoki, Brooke Shields, Matt Lucas and partner, Eva Longoria, “Cocoon” director Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Quincy Jones and Wesley Snipes. Partygoers rocked the dance floor before sitting down to classic American and British fare.

Hollywood A-Listers
The men chose formal suiting for the occasion while the women went for evening couture showing plenty of skin. All in all, they looked a classy group. Seen in this photograph shot the evening of the party, David and Victoria Beckham are flanked by power couples Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Tom looked dapper as usual in a black suit with aubergine silk tie. David sported his own kicking style in a charcoal gray suit with shadow striping and black tie. Will went for red carpet casual, dressed in a shimmering platinum suit with white V-neck shirt, coordinating white sneakers and rimless shades. The Independence Day star mellowed out the rest of the group with his laidback fashion. The wives chose to flash their millions but did it tastefully. Katester went for Hollywood glamour in a strapless scarlet gown with open-toe heels which made her tower over hubby Tom. David’s better half wore a short and strappy black dress with peep-toe platforms. And Jada donned a black minidress, bling at the ears and wrist, and a pair of black ankle boots.

The Look of Love
In this photograph of the two, TomKat seems happier than ever. Tom, recently arrived from taping in Germany, looks none the worse for wear in his suit while wife Katie is the ultimate lady in red. We have to say, even though she was never a misfit, the girl’s style has improved by leaps and bounds post-wedding vows. She’s bridged the gap between them in image if not in age. Not only that, but she’s one of the few celebs we know that doesn’t reach for the shades in public. Lives in her own skin, we love it!

Beckham Incorporated
Soccer’s First Couple comes to the States. What else could one ask for when neighbor Tom Cruise gives you a glitzy affair in a national landmark? It’s only right that David and V, who share their own brand together would also share the same hair color! But more than that, their outfits speak volumes about them. Beckham, who likes to change his look as often as Posh, brings his liking for snappy threads to LA. Victoria, in a dress with transparent outer layer and trademark hooters finishes the look. She’s so good in her taste in real estate she bought the Beckham home before David even stepped in it! The styles never clash for these two British expats. Here’s to many more goals, on and off the pitch for Mr. Beckham and his designer wife.

Femme du Jour
New bride Eva Longoria has a happy glow, and why not. The ABC star fizzes in a champagne bubble dress with parrot green pumps. The silver clutch, watch, and jewelry all showcase an amazing summer tan while the plunging neckline flaunts a great set of funbags. Gabrielle would approve.

Fashionistas say American males could use some of Beckham's poshness

David Beckham: international soccer star; heartthrob; designer clotheshorse; European fashion icon.

Victoria Beckham snaps up £250,000 walk-in closet that tells her what to wear!

It seems that singer Victoria Beckham a.k.a Posh Spice has coughed up 250,000 pounds on a walk-in closet that scans her and tells her what to wear before she steps out of her posh LA home to meet the paparazzi.

Apparently, the equipment with a CAT scan can examine the singer’s clothes and provide her with a 360 degrees view.

The closet can also archive Beckman’s day-to-day clothes to ensure that she doesn’t repeat any of her outfits quite often.

The walk-in-closet comes with ‘a leather floor, a Baccarat crystal chandelier, and a 40,000 pounds Andy Warhol show print, according to In Touch magazine.

However, Beckham’s rep has denied the report and said that though the closet has been installed, it hasn’t got computer wizardry, reports Daily Mail.

An insider said that the closet definitely has a 360-degree mirror like the one seen on ‘What Not to Wear’, Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine's TV show.

The source added that Beckham has also taken her pics in all her outfits, footwear and other accessories, and that details stored will help her locate them in her closet.

Victoria Beckham To Judge A Fashion Competition

Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is set to judge a British fashion competition. The style icon, 33, will judge creations by hopeful designers at Graduate Fashion Week in London next month.

Beckham will interview fashion students and judge their designs alongside style experts Harper's Bazaar's U.S. editor Glenda Bailey, Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz and British fashion chain River Island's managing director Richard Bradbury.
Graduate Fashion Week chairman Terry Mansfield says, "I had the idea of asking Victoria to be on of the judges earlier this year and when we met she was very interested in it."

"She has been involved in designing already and she is seen as a global fashion icon. There's no questions that her presence will also help the students get more attention globally and if I have helped to get a couple of students a few more jobs then I haven't done such a bad thing."

Beckhams Clash With Ralph Lauren Over Children's photos

David and Victoria Beckham are reportedly furious with their celebrity designer pal Ralph Lauren after discovering he sent photographs of their sons Brooklyn and Romeo to the press.

The Beckhams are allegedly outraged paparazzi pictures of their sons wearing clothes from the fashion house at the christening of Geri Halliwell's daughter last weekend have been circulated without their approval.

A source tells Britain's The Sun, "Neither of them gave their consent for this -- as far as they were concerned they went to a friend's private christening with their kids. It's one thing if they are on the red carpet or at a showbiz bash, but this is just ridiculous -- and totally irresponsible.

"They couldn't believe that Ralph Lauren seemed to be going out of its way to encourage people to use pictures of their children. It's exploitative and was clearly done to boost sales of the clothes."

Here's why Ralph Lauren had Victoria and David Beckham going 'apoplectic'

Soccer ace David Beckham and wife Victoria aka Posh Spice reportedly went "apoplectic" when fashion house Ralph Lauren used their sons to drum up a little publicity.

The company issued a press release shortly after the christening of pal Geri Halliwell's baby Bluebell, revealing that the couple's elder sons - Brooklyn and Romeo - had worn 250 pounds Ralph Lauren Wimbledon blazers to the event.
In its press release the fashion giant declared: "Polo Ralph Lauren is pleased to announce that Brooklyn and Romeo Beckham wore the children's Wimbledon blazer by Ralph Lauren to the christening of Geri Halliwell's daughter Bluebell, 22nd April 07. Please note that these photos are not the property of Polo Ralph Lauren, for reference only"
However, what really made the couple see red, was the fact that pictures of the boys were also sent out along with information as to where these pictures could be bought, an insider revealed.
"Victoria and David are fiercely protective of their three sons and went apoplectic when they discovered what Ralph Lauren had done. Neither of them gave their consent for this - as far as they were concerned they went to a friend's private christening with their kids. It's one thing if they are on the red carpet or at a showbiz bash, but this is just ridiculous - and totally irresponsible," the Mirror quoted the insider, as saying.
"They couldn't believe that Ralph Lauren seemed to be going out of its way to encourage people to use pictures of their children. It's exploitative and was clearly done to boost sales of the clothes.
"It is upsetting for them as parents to constantly have to deal with photographers taking snaps of their kids - Romeo especially gets upset when the flashbulbs go off," the insider added.
The suddenly frosty relations between the Beckhams and Ralph Lauren thawed a bit when, less than 24 hours later, the firm apologized to the couple and urged recipients of the press announcement to ignore it.
"With reference to the information below, please be aware that this was not circulated with the co-operation of the Beckhams, and attention to the children is not endorsed," the email stated.
"The issue has been resolved," A Ralph Lauren spokesperson later insisted.

Posh and Becks: America's Latest Fashion Duo?

Will style-savvy Brits David and Victoria Beckham start fashion trends in the States?

The British are coming! The British are coming! That's DAVID and VICTORIA BECKHAM (aka "Posh Spice"), to be exact.

to the States, after David signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team (for which he is being paid a cool $250 million) -- but the infamous Brits are also bringing their equally infamous fashion sense across the pond as well.

The duo have long made headlines on their native shores for their star style -- David's "faux-hawk" made waves in the UK, long before the celeb hairstyles of ANGELINA JOLIE's son, MADDOX, and even current "American Idol" contender SANJAYA MALAKAR.

And Mr. Beckham's keen sartorial sense has frequently been chronicled in the Brit rags. As a fashion icon, he has graced the pages of such mags as GQ, where he seems to epitomize and embrace the "metrosexual" aesthetic -- that of the masculine celeb taking part in what have classically been deemed as "feminine" concerns with style and fashion.

Of course, Victoria is no stranger to fashion herself. The former SPICE GIRL has her own fashion line, and she was frequently spotted with pal KATIE HOLMES while in France for Fashion Week. She made waves with her fashion sense at TOM and Katie's lavish wedding festivities in Italy last November, donning fab and funky couture outfits that caused a media frenzy with the paparazzi.

"Posh" has also published a book in the UK which details her love of all things fashion, titled, That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything In Between. But will the fabulously fashionable duo stir up fashion trends in the American celeb scene? That remains to be seen.

Slaves to fashion

If you absolutely must have those oversized sunnies, if you've gone and got your Victoria Beckham bob or if you're considering naming your baby Supernova Strawberry Lala - take heart.

Your behaviour may be shallow, slavish and unoriginal but it's perfectly normal, according to a university study. And it may even have an evolutionary basis.
Researchers at the University of Durham in the north of England studied the popularity of baby names, music and even dog breeds in an attempt to gain an insight into what drives fashions and trends in popular culture. Not surprisingly, they found that trends are driven by a small number of "innovators", usually celebrities, and followed by the majority.

"Innovators are the cool ones who 'pump' new fashions into our world,'" says researcher Dr Alex Bentley, a lecturer in anthropology. The research, published in the latest journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, also found that trends change at a steady and predictable rate. But the copying is random, which means it's impossible to predict exactly which trend will become flavour of the day. The research is good news for viral marketers, Bentley says, but the trick is identifying the innovators amongst the copy cats. Bill von Hippel, a professor of psychology at the University of Queensland, says the study backs previous research on "lead users", a term coined in the 1980s by his father, Professor Eric von Hippel. "A lead user in fashion would be a celebrity of some sort and a lead user in skiing would be the world's best," he says.

"New jeans may come out of Calvin Klein but they're just as likely to come out of movie stars and people that we like to emulate.

"Once they do something, we see them a lot and because we really like them, we're much more predisposed to think that's cool than if we see a hobo wearing the same thing.

"Celebrities are natural leaders in (the fashion) domain, scientists and politicians are the leaders in (the ideas) domain. Every domain has its own lead users.''

Von Hippel says our innate tendency to copy and imitate is probably rooted in the way we learn. "I'm not sure why it's evolved but in all probability imitation is how we learn. We do this as children and we do it as adults," he says.

But as much as we like to follow trends set by our idols, they don't always catch on immediately, von Hippel says. "When you first hear a new song or see a new fashion you typically don't like it at first ... although we're interested in new things we don't like them nearly as much as once we get to know them a little bit.
``There are evolutionary reasons for that, because if something becomes familiar it means it didn't kill you the first time.'' And while we're busy running around copying the celebrities, the celebrities themselves aren't immune from imitation. "Celebrities also jump on the bandwagon," he says - and even then there are the innovators and the imitators.
Hollywood star Angelina Jolie can apparently do no wrong by building her "rainbow family" of assorted international orphans. But when Madonna imitated Jolie by adopting her own African orphan, the public was much less tolerant.

Celebrities also show themselves to be herd animals when it comes to causes, whether it's HIV/AIDS, climate change or ending Third World poverty.

Often, the explanation doesn't need a university study.

"You just look like you're clueless and left out if you aren't at some level aware of and doing similar to what the rest of them are doing," von Hippel says.
